Key Takeaways:

  • Stockholm-based Green Voltis has raised €13.5 million in Series A funding from Lochpine Capital, the sole investor in the round.
  • The company manages and trades more than 1.2 GWh of battery storage capacity under contract and in operation, using its Aether AI trading agent and Chronos energy management system.
  • The investment will support R&D, expansion across European electricity markets and a Power-to-Compute business targeting energy infrastructure for AI data centres.

Stockholm-based energy technology company Green Voltis has raised €13.5 million in Series A funding from Lochpine Capital, the sole investor in the round. The company provides route-to-market (RTM) optimisation services for battery storage and renewable energy assets, combining grid connection support, energy management and AI-powered electricity trading.

Led by co-founder and CEO Martin Kievit, Green Voltis has more than 1.2 GWh of battery storage capacity under contract and in operation, with market access established or being developed in ten European countries. The funding will support further development of its trading and energy management systems, expansion into additional markets and a new business focused on powering AI data centres.

Managing Battery Storage Across European Electricity Markets

Europe’s growing renewable energy capacity is increasing the need for flexible assets that can respond to fluctuations in electricity generation and demand. Battery storage operators face challenges ranging from lengthy grid connection procedures to changing technical requirements and increasingly volatile electricity markets.

Green Voltis works with standalone battery storage facilities and projects combining renewable generation with storage. Its services cover grid connection, commissioning, qualification for grid services and electricity trading, allowing asset owners to manage technical and commercial operations through a single provider.

The company’s technology is built around two systems. Chronos, an energy management platform developed in Sweden, controls battery operations and supports compliance with grid requirements, including grid-forming capabilities. Aether AI, a trading agent based on time-series foundation models, forecasts electricity prices and allocates battery capacity across day-ahead, intraday and balancing markets.

Rather than committing an asset to a single electricity market, Aether AI is designed to combine revenue opportunities across multiple markets as conditions change. Green Voltis also offers commercial arrangements including revenue sharing, tolling and revenue floors, which can provide greater revenue predictability for project owners and lenders.

According to the company, assets under its management have consistently outperformed the Clean Horizon index, an independent benchmark of battery storage revenues. Green Voltis did not disclose the size of the performance difference in its announcement.

Series A to Support AI Development and Data Centre Infrastructure

The €13.5 million investment will fund research and development for Aether AI and Chronos, alongside expansion in key European markets. Green Voltis is also extending its energy management capabilities into data centre infrastructure through a business it calls Power-to-Compute.

The initiative addresses a constraint facing new data centre developments: access to electricity. In some major European data centre markets, grid connections can take seven to ten years, according to Green Voltis. At the same time, grid operators and regulators are introducing requirements for large electricity consumers to provide greater flexibility.

Green Voltis plans to work with compute operators to develop data centre sites that can adjust their electricity consumption and interact with the grid as flexible energy assets. The company has identified a pipeline of approximately 120 MW of powered land in the Nordic countries for potential development.

“Every new gigawatt of renewables makes Europe’s grid harder to balance, and flexibility now sets the pace of the energy transition,” said Martin Kievit, CEO and co-founder of Green Voltis. “We built Aether and Chronos to turn storage and renewable plants into assets the grid can rely on and investors can bank on.”

Lochpine Capital, a global asset management firm focused on the energy transition, is backing the company’s expansion into both battery optimisation and data centre energy infrastructure. Blake Niu, Partner and Head of Private Equity at Lochpine Capital, cited Green Voltis’s operating performance and its combination of AI technology and industrial expertise as factors behind the investment.

Green Voltis will initially focus its Power-to-Compute plans on the Nordic region, where its proposed 120 MW development pipeline will depend on partnerships with compute operators.
