Omio Group, a global multimodal travel company connecting travellers with rail, bus, flight, and ferry options, announced an agreement to acquire Rail Europe, an international rail distribution platform. Following completion, Rail Europe would join Omio’s B2C booking platform, B2B distribution business, and travel discovery brand Rome2Rio.
Expanding Global Rail Distribution
The acquisition would create a broader ground transportation network selling around 22 million train tickets annually and connecting more than 28,000 transport operators and travel sellers. Rail Europe would continue operating under the established brand while gaining access to Omio Group’s technology, platform capabilities, and multimodal inventory. Omio would also expand access to Rail Europe’s network across more than 70 countries and benefit from over 90 years of rail industry expertise.
Jean-Francois Bessiron, Chief B2B Officer at Omio Group, said: “This deal marks a transformative moment for the future of global ground transport. Omio and Rail Europe would give the industry a player with the technology and scale to make connected, accessible, and affordable train travel a reality for all. The sector has been constrained by outdated systems and controlled by dominant players for far too long.”
Combining Technology and Rail Expertise
The proposed deal brings together Omio’s technology and global scale with Rail Europe’s established consumer brand and B2B distribution network, strengthening the combined position in the growing global rail market.
Björn Bender, CEO and Executive Chairman of Rail Europe, said: “The past few years have been transformational for Rail Europe. With our teams and partners, we built an independent business and a unique position in the global rail industry. For the next chapter, Omio and Rail Europe are a natural fit. Omio brings significant scale and transformative technology. Rail Europe adds considerable rail experience, a trusted international consumer brand, and the strongest B2B distribution network. Together, we would offer more to our travellers, partners and the rail industry than either company could achieve on its own.”
Transaction Approval
The proposed acquisition remains subject to consultation with the CSE (Comité Social et Économique). Completion will follow the conclusion of the required consultation process.
