Phlux Technology, a UK-based innovator in infrared sensor technology, has secured a £9 million Series A investment to drive expansion into optical communications and sensing industries. BGF, recognized as the most active growth capital investor in the UK and Ireland, led the round alongside continued support from Octopus Ventures, Northern Gritstone, and Foresight. This funding aims to accelerate the development of antimonide-based semiconductor technology, delivering higher-speed, energy-efficient sensor and connectivity systems.

With a foundation rooted in advanced research from the University of Sheffield, investment proceeds will be directed toward scaling operations, increasing production capacity, and launching two new product ranges. Ultra-low-noise infrared sensors from Phlux offer significant enhancements to communications technology, enabling data transmission rates up to five times higher for free-space and fiber-optic networks. Initial engineering samples have already demonstrated sensitivity improvements exceeding 5dB over existing commercial alternatives. Beyond telecommunications, these sensors hold transformative potential for applications in automotive safety, industrial automation, defense, security, and high-precision gas detection.

Since securing a £4 million seed round led by Octopus Ventures in 2022, efforts have focused on building a global, fabless supply chain capable of meeting the demands of high-volume markets. Customers span Asia, Europe, and North America, with new funding positioned to expand engineering and commercial teams while increasing production capabilities. Strengthening industry partnerships will further drive adoption of next-generation infrared sensing solutions across global communication networks.

Phlux CEO, Ben White, stated, “This funding comes at a pivotal moment as demand for high-speed optical communication systems is growing enormously. By developing world-class, high-performance infrared sensors, we are enabling industries to push the boundaries of connectivity, efficiency, and security by removing a technology bottleneck that has persisted for over 20 years.”

BGF Partner, Luke Rajah, emphasized the disruptive potential of this semiconductor innovation, noting, "Phlux has developed a game-changing technology in a sector that’s long overdue for disruption. With strong academic roots, early commercial traction, and a compelling roadmap, the team is well-positioned to lead in infrared sensing. Backed by BGF’s deep tech investment experience, we’re excited to support Phlux in scaling globally across the sensing and telecommunications markets."
