Key Takeaways:

  • Gigablue secured $20 million to expand science-based marine carbon removal operations.
  • The company uses microalgae carbon fixation aligned with natural ocean processes.
  • Funding supports deployment scaling, advanced monitoring, and commercialization of carbon removal units.

Gigablue, a marine carbon dioxide removal company developing science-based solutions to restore ocean health while addressing climate change at scale, announced a $20 million first close of financing, revealed during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos. The round was led by Planet Ocean Capital after an extensive technical, scientific, and environmental due-diligence process, with participation from mission-aligned venture capital firms and family offices focused on durable carbon removal and healthy oceans as critical global infrastructure.

Founded in 2022, Gigablue advances marine carbon removal through Microalgae Carbon Fixation and Sinking (MCFS), a pathway formally released by the Puro.earth Advisory Board in September 2025. The methodology mirrors the ocean’s natural biological pump, enabling long-term atmospheric carbon removal through natural marine processes and supporting scalable, environmentally responsible deployment.

Gigablue underpins each deployment with a robust Measurement, Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification framework integrating in-situ oceanographic data, environmental DNA sampling, water chemistry analysis, and custom deep-sea monitoring tools. This scientific foundation supports transparency, environmental integrity, and progress toward issuing high-quality carbon removal units.

High-integrity carbon removal is increasingly recognized as essential alongside emissions reductions,” said Gigablue leadership. “This first close reflects growing confidence that marine carbon removal — when governed by science, transparency, and environmental safeguards — can play a critical role in achieving global net-zero targets while strengthening ocean health.

Proceeds will support scaling MCFS deployments, expanding monitoring capabilities, advancing commercial issuance of carbon removal units, and progressing toward the next close, as Gigablue builds the scientific and operational foundations for durable marine carbon removal at global scale.
