Pixel Photonics, a quantum technology company developing superconducting single-photon detectors, announced €13.5 million in total funding to scale its photonics platform for industrial use. The financing includes a €5 million seed round led by Futury Capital and €8.5 million from the European Innovation Council Accelerator, combining grants and equity. Investors also include SPRIND, Kensho Ventures, and High-Tech Gründerfonds.
Scaling Quantum Detection Technology
The funding will support commercialization of Pixel Photonics’ ARCTIC© Platform, which converts complex superconducting detector systems into compact, scalable chip-based solutions. The technology enables high-performance light detection for applications across quantum computing, secure communications, medical diagnostics, and advanced sensing.
“This financing is a major milestone for Pixel Photonics. It enables us to transform what has so far been a highly specialized quantum technology into robust, scalable industrial products. Our goal is to make the most powerful light detection as reliable and accessible as today’s semiconductor components - and to bring it into real industrial systems. We are excited to take this step together with strong partners and establish this key technology in the market.” said Nicolai Walter, CEO of Pixel Photonics.
From Lab Innovation to Market Deployment
Pixel Photonics focuses on transforming superconducting detectors from laboratory systems into commercially viable components. The platform integrates waveguide-based single-photon detectors into chip-scale architectures, reducing complexity and enabling broader adoption.
“Pixel Photonics is transforming superconducting light detectors from complex laboratory instruments into scalable chip solutions. In doing so, we are delivering the ‘silicon transistor’ of the quantum era — enabling the transition from niche applications to mass markets and opening entirely new horizons in secure communication and imaging technologies.” said Dr. Wladick Hartmann, CTO of Pixel Photonics.
Strategic Support and Market Expansion
Selection for the European Innovation Council Accelerator highlights the strategic importance of the technology for Europe’s innovation ecosystem. Funding will accelerate market entry and expand applications beyond quantum-specific use cases.
“We founded Pixel Photonics to overcome a fundamental bottleneck in photon detection. With the EIC Accelerator, we can bring our platform to market faster and scale it across broader application fields,” said Nicolai Walter.
